While living in France, either on exchange or temporary stay, one might come across the possibility of dating a French person.

I recently came across this issue from a good friend of mine, exasperated about a few dates she went on and confused about the body language.

The date The French dislike making a ‘date’ obviously romantic as it is all about courting, testing, and playful conversations.

Rendez-vous are more laid-back, unlike the more formal English or American rules of dating, so don’t be surprised to be invited to a meet-up with a group of people or to receive a last-minute message such as ‘on va boire un verre? ’) or an invitation to go for an afternoon walk or a catch-up with friends.

*note: This only applies to the 'true French'; meaning those who were raised in France.

Also, it does not mean 100% of what I say is correct.. * In America Dating is considered a sort of test, a prerelationship try period in which you go out, get to know the person.

Yeah, dating in France is quite different from dating in the States and I'm sure those of you that have dated a French guy can agree. In the United States dating is not seen as a huge deal and is considered sort of like a "trial relationship." If you don't like the person there really isn't anything that would prevent you to just move on to the next guy.

Affection such as kissing or hugging is completely normal and not considered a big deal.

In the States we discuss serious relationships after quite a few dates; kissing, affection or hugging are normal in dating..Things will be slightly different if they’re both foreigners in a third country.Knowing these local rules is of an utmost importance.Meeting The French tend to meet for the first time through social circles or friends. They rarely go on blind dates and prefer to get to know each other first.and it is also normal for us to date more than one person during a period of time.Often it's just not a big deal and the good night kiss is sort of an expected thing... It's totally normal to go on a few dates, then just decide it's not for you. Do you simply go to the country, you meet the man, and there you go? Everything in our lives is influenced by our cultures. Especially dating…Ignoring the dating rules of the country you’re in will cause trouble and failures in your dating attempts (yes, I’m sadly talking from experience here, Jennifer, if you read this : “sorry, I misunderstood a few things back in 1998”). The dream of every foreign woman, and a few gay men too…But how make this dream come true? One big mistake a bunch of people make when dealing with love and relationships is to assume that: Wrong!Actually, the very concept of dating is not very clearly defined in France. It mostly consists in saying “Would you like to [insert something about dining, going to a movie or similar activities here] together?” You usually ask this to the girl after you’ve known her a little, having met her at work, school, through common friends, etc.
