No singing, no drums, bass or electric instruments. Then, one evening, late at night, when we were feeling cold and defeated, a group of young Irish inner-city kids passed by after finishing [their set].The leader, Shane, suddenly threw all his case of money into ours and left without saying anything. But the audience somehow understand that and accept it.” Having undertaken an extraordinary range of collaborative projects, from albums with members of Metallica and Rage Against the Machine to the soundtracks of Pirates of the Caribbean and Puss in Boots, the pair have now embarked on their most unlikely project to date: the album Area 52.Working with former Apple A&R man Peter Asher, known to an earlier generation as one half of Sixties vocal duo Peter & Gordon and hardly the most obvious choice of producer, they have reworked their best-known pieces with the backing of a full Afro-Cuban orchestra.

“For us, a gig isn’t about the artists, but about the total event,” says Rodrigo Sanchez.

“It’s a different proposal but people were ready to open up to dfferent ideas,” Says Sanchez.“I had a very clear idea in my head: I won’t be something that I’m not,” adds Quintero, also 40, in a singsong voice that leaves no doubt that English is not her first language. Having begun their music career in the early Nineties in a heavy metal band, Tierra Acida (“Acid Land”), in Mexico City, they moved to Dublin at the start of the last decade to busk as a duo.

They started covering hard rock songs in a raw Latin style, including Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven and Metallica’s Orion, both of which appeared on their first proper album, a self-titled release from 2006.

'When I go on stage to do my solo spot, I don’t know what the hell I’m gonna do,” says Gabriela Quintero of Rodrigo y Gabriela. It makes me nervous, but it gives the music an edge.

Whatever we do, we have to keep the element of surprise.” Has there been a more romantic musical story than that of the two Mexican heavy-metal aficionados – lovers as well as musical collaborators – who traded in their electric guitars and amps for a life of acoustic adventure on the road: blowing into Europe via Dublin, busking the streets, then setting festivals alight with their incendiary blend of metal-inspired riffing, jazz dexterity and latin rhythm.

“It’s about the energy coming back to us from the audience.

Sometimes when we get on stage, we’re so exhausted we know from the first few notes that our fingers aren’t working well.

2016 has been another incredible year for Rodrigo y Gabriela, as they have taken their explosive live set to twenty-five different countries, including their first ever tour of South America.

They also played the Hollywood Bowl with special guests Robert Trujillo (Metallica), Marty Friedman (Megadeth) and an eighty-piece orchestra.

Rodrigo Y Gabriela will also perform the following regional gigs: at Sligo Live Festival on October 28 and Opera House, Cork (as part of the Cork Jazz Festival) on October 30.

Tickets for The Academy cost €36.50 and go on sale Friday September 16 at 9am via Ticketmaster.
