In 1800, when she was approximately 12, she and several other girls were kidnapped by a group of Hidatsa in a battle that resulted in the deaths of several Shoshone: four men, four women, and several boys.
She was taken as a captive to a Hidatsa village near present-day Washburn, North Dakota.

Melissa Conroy has been selected from a competitive, national pool of nominees to participate in a faculty seminar on the teaching of interfaith understanding, Muskingum University announced today.
The seminar is hosted by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) and Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC), with support from the Henry Luce Foundation. Conroy, will participate in the five-day “Teaching Interfaith Understanding” seminar June 18-22, at De Paul University in Chicago.
